Every Photographer Is Different – Here’s What Makes My Photography Unique
When looking for a wedding photographer, it only makes sense to start by looking for the STYLE you are most drawn to. This could be traditional, editorial, artistic, or documentary / photojournalistic. This is a great start, but don’t stop there!
You shouldn’t limit your search for a photographer based solely on their self-identity into a specific style or niche! Photography is ultimately an art form, and as such it cannot help but be influenced by the lives and personality of the one holding the camera. So when looking for specific results in imagery for your special day, you need to think much broader and richer than the narrow perspective of Style A, B, C and D.
Documentary Style Photographer A who likes the moodier things in life, and focused on tiny moments that often go unnoticed, and works solo while on the job will ALWAYS take drastically different photos than Documentary Style Photographer B who likes things bright and joyful, and focused on the bigger picture and larger moments, and works alongside a husband or wife while on the job. This isn’t a bad thing! It’s just… how it is!
And that isn’t to say that Photographer A cannot or would not be moved to capture a different tone,
or feel in an image when the fancy strikes. And vice versa. This is where you have to step outside of the box and move from style to personality. This involved getting to know your photographer!
So step one is (and should be) find photographers that shoot in your preferred photography style.
Narrow it down to photographers that capture the moments you want to see captured on your day. How do they see the world? How do they approach marriage and weddings? Do they see the beauty in the mundane? Do they tell a story with their images?
Next, find the TONE and EMOTION you prefer in images. After post processing is completed, do you like photos with a deep, rich feel? Or light and airy and dreamy? How does your photographer see and interpret their world?
And throughout steps 1-3, you should always, always, ALWAYS keep the PERSONALITY of your photographer in mind. Not only should you two click as a pair (you need to feel comfortable around your photographer), but you should trust that they have the vision to artfully and completely capture your special day.
So what about me? What makes my photography unique? SO GLAD YOU ASKED!!
I am a photojournalistic / documentary style photographer.
This means that I take pictures of the day as it unfolds. One of the mantras I see a lot in documentary style photography is, “As you see it, as it was.” When documenting your weddings, I tend to artfully capture the day with all it’s freckles, all it’s off kilter moments, all it’s raw emotion and perfect imperfections. But I will also step in to compose a lifestyle shot to better represent the FEEL and EMOTION of the day. So I will unobtrusively straighten a floral arrangement that got bumped out of line to capture that perfect setting you worked so hard on. I am not completely hands off. But at the core of my style and overarching vision, I approach each wedding with the goal of telling a beautiful true life love story.
I tend to capture the candid and unexpected moments alongside lifestyle imagery.
The raw burst of laughter when your bridesmaids remind you of your bachelorette party. The tearful smile as you hug your parents before the ceremony. Your nephew longingly staring at the uncut wedding cake. The way the light filters through the stained glass windows in the church. These are the precious moments that memories are made of. These images are the primary thread that is woven into the tapestry of lifestyle and traditional images I capture on each wedding day. I am a storyteller at heart and I love to capture the environment and décor to “set the stage” and then I flesh out the story, the romance and the adventure of a wedding day in my photos.
My photos are bright and joyful in tone and feel.
I am a hopeless romantic at heart. Disney movie marathons filled with love at first sight and true loves kiss are still a regular thing in my life. I am happily married and still madly in love with my soul mate and best friend – who works alongside me to capture the happily ever afters of each bride and groom that trusts me to photograph their special day! This joyful and dreamy approach to one of lifes greatest adventures – marrying your best friend! – permeates my photos, resulting in a bright, airy and colorful images filled with raw joy and intense emotion.
So now you know what makes my photography unique! I approach each wedding with fresh eyes, trying to capture real moments and raw emotion, and create something truly unique.
